Born into a pastor’s home, Joe was raised near Philadelphia PA, and then in upstate South Carolina. He earned degrees from Southern Wesleyan University (1978), Asbury Theological Seminary (1981), the University of Kentucky (1986), and Union Theological Seminary in Virginia (1991). Joe has served on the faculty of Asbury Theological Seminary since 1988, teaching in the School of Biblical Interpretation. He has written John: A Bible Commentary in the Wesleyan Tradition, and co-written with Jerry Walls Why I am not a Calvinist. Joe is an ordained minister in the Wesleyan Church (South Carolina, 1983). He and his wife of 34 years, Regina, have two adult children, and live near Wilmore, KY.
